My wallet thirsted for travel mug at Christmas
With promises of cheap refills through Valentines.
Tapered plastic, green letters on black
Splashes of yellow, club colors
NFL would envy.
Hazelnut fumes tickle my nose on first sip each work morn
And brims each weekend for my writing spot.
By Independence Day, accidental falls dent plastic rim
Rough jags that pierce lip flesh
And makes unfit lid that drips on clothes.
Ready to discard with school,
Until the comforting rhythm – fill, sip, write – needed
Now faithful companion shuttles cheap java to bright new drinking cup.
