My wallet thirsted for travel mug promotion at Christmas
Gas station promises free until Valentines, then cheap refills
Tapered plastic, green letters on black
Splashes of yellow, club colors
NFL would envy.
Writer’s drinking use
Hazelnut fumes tickle my nose on first sip each work morn
And brims each weekend for my writing spot.
Mug’s change with use
By Independence Day, accidental falls dented plastic rim
Rough jags that pierce lip flesh
And makes unfit lid that sully shirts.
Ready to discard with school,
Until the comforting rhythm – fill, sip, write, sip, write – remembered
Now faithful mug shuttles cheap java to bright new drinking cup.
